.... when you slide to the edge of your seat in anticipation of the next play? (No, huh? Well, who asked you, Bennett?) I had one of those moments during last night's Eagles-Steelers preseason game. Philadelphia was trailing Pittsburgh, 16-10, with just seconds remaining and had a 3rd down at the Steelers 15 yard line. A touchdown would surely make me a winner. One of the garbage Eagles WRs, who will most likely be cut in a week or two, broke wide open in the middle of the end zone and 3rd string QB A.J. Feeley stepped up and fired a pass five feet over his head. The cameras then cut to a shot of TGAJF grinning, then breaking out into a laugh over the fact that he had completely whiffed on a gimme TD and ultimately cost his team the game. But what does he care? It's only the preseason.
Maybe CB is on to something with his don't watch the games theory....
By the way, this is what I would like my blog to be about: Me ranting my biased and uneducated opinions on sports. I would really enjoy that. Although, it would probably cut my readership in half. (In other words, I could lose 4-5 people.)
Yesterday: 0-2, -$450
Year to Date: 1-2, -$250
I'll pass today. I considered betting the Dolphins but didn't. In other words, go out and bet the Dolphins right now because they are going to win tonight. You're welcome.
The Redskins are playing the Bills tonight on the NFL Network. I'm just going to watch that game and cringe every time one of our key guys is slow to get up. Isn't the preseason great?
It's been a long time since I did that thing where I give my stupid thoughts next to an asterisk. For your guys sake, I'll even talk about my poor mother:
* She called me yesterday and we talked for a while. A long while. All she ever wants to talk about is her plans to visit Las Vegas. I reminded her that I was going to be off on Christmas Day and that she should come out then. She liked the idea but said she didn't want to leave the dogs alone at Christmas. I then mentioned that I was also off on Thanksgiving. She got excited again but again she pointed out that this would mean the dogs were alone at Thanksgiving. I mentioned New Years Day, which is the same day of the week as Christmas and therefore another day off, but again.... You can probably see where this is going. (I wonder if the dogs would mind being alone on Labor Day?) The funny thing is that my family, and my mother especially, used to make fun of those people who were way too into their pets and then we got our dog and became the worst one of those familes in the history of the world. Even my dad, who seems genuinely annoyed by his three children most of the time, takes the time to pet and spoil the dogs.
* I asked my Mom if she had seen The Dark Knight yet and she informed me that she still wasn't willing to see it because she is afraid it will be "Too scary." I tried to explain to her that it was a comic book movie but she wouldn't listen to me. She is one of these people who forms an opinion and then is completely unwilling to ever change her mind no matter what new information she is presented with. Even when she is proven wrong beyond a shadow of a doubt, she still won't change her opinion no matter what. There's a word for these people.
"Women."
* I was talking to my sister the other day and she was telling me about her new job. It kind of sounds like The Office, where everyone just sits around doing nothing, waiting for the next coffee break or cake party. She was telling me about this kid she works with who recently had a family reunion in Canton, Ohio. In other words, his family is so crazy about the Redskins that they held their reunion in Canton on the weekend that Art Monk and Darrell Green were inducted into the Hall of Fame. I would like to meet this guy. I want to ask him if he has a sister. (Or, failing that, a hot aunt.) I get stuck in the crazy family that won't leave their dogs for more than 48 hours and he gets to have Redskins-themed family reunions? That just doesn't seem right.
* I don't know if you guys have heard about this yet but apparently the Packers traded Brett Favre to the Jets. Seriously, it happened a few days ago. There's a few things I want to touch on in regards to the Favre trade:
- Chris Bennett never once wavered in his belief that Favre would play this season. He didn't believe for a second that Favre was done. Stuff like this is only going to fuel his perception of himself as a sharp.
- While I don't think this move makes the Jets a serious threat to the Patriots in the AFC East, I do think it will help them. Favre is nowhere near the player the media makes him out to be but he is certainly an upgrade over Kellen Clemens. The Jets defense and offensive line also look to be much improved this season. The blog will call for them to earn a Wild Card berth.
- What's the Over/Under on number of shots of Deanna Favre we see during the first nationally televised Jets game? She may end up challenging Brenda Warner circa 2000.
* I just can't get over this column I read the other day on FoxSports.com. Look at the part written by Peter Schrager, in which he claims that Eli Manning put together one of "The greatest two-month strings in the history of the position" last season. Wow. Here are his numbers by the way - Check out December and January. 18-53 in a home loss to a mediocre Redskins team? Check. 7-15 in a win over the Bills which he basically watched? Check. Not a single game passing for more than 300 yards? Check. Manning played fine in the postseason but did nohing spectacular. He was just there while Romo and Favre choked in the playoffs and got lucky on a flukey pass to David Tyree in the 4th quarter of a Super Bowl won by his defense. He didn't play poorly but to call it one of the greatest two-month strings in the history of the position is the type of exaggeration I normally only expect to hear from Ed. What a ridiculous comment. And this guy gets paid to write about the NFL? Again, that just doesn't seem right.
* The Mets gained some ground yesterday with a win over the Marlins, while the Phillies were losing to the Pirates. Chase Utley went 0-5, with 2 K's and 7 LOB in the 12 inning affair. I really do want to show Murray Murray footage of this guy someday. He just never has any good games. It's going to take some very crafty editing on my part to make him look good.
* I'm watching the Nationwide Race right now and there is a driver named Wheeler Boys. I'm not kidding.
Dude, I'm serious.
Fine, I'll prove it to you - Wheeler Boys.
(Smirk)
(Still smirking)
Okay, I'm done.
I tried making picks yesterday and it didn't work out too well. Why don't you check in with my buddy Hoffy and see what he has? The sharps are due for a good run.
I lost both of my NFL bets yesterday so I'm in the mood to hate, hence my poll. I'd be interested to hear from any of you on potential write-in votes, as there are lots of guys out there who qualify. I wanted to include Eli Manning but I still refuse to believe that the majority of people think that guy is a good player. I am reserving this poll only for players that I know most people consider to be studs when in reality they are either way past their primes, creations of the media, or both.
New pictures today, too. I think it's funny that people were shocked I posted a picture of tween starlet Miley Cyrus. No one made a peep when I posted pictures of Kelly Kapowski from her days on Saved By the Bell. She was probably as young, if not younger, than Cyrus in those pictures. Just wanted to point that out.
I really hope no more Redskins get hurt tonight.
Enjoy the game.
